Police officer witnesses fatal stabbing in Yakima

YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) — A police officer who witnessed a fatal stabbing in Yakima chased down the suspect.

Police say the officer saw two men fighting in a street Tuesday afternoon. The officer chased a man who ran and arrested him in an alley. The 23-year-old suspect, Freddy DeLeon, is jailed for investigation of homicide.

Other officers and medics gave the victim first aid on the sidewalk for multiple stab wounds. He was taken to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital where 31-year-old Angel G. Mendez died.

This is the first homicide this year in Yakima.
