KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Charl Schwartzel of South Africa shot an 8-under 64 to take the first-round lead at the Malaysian Open on Thursday.
Starting from the 10th tee, he had nine birdies and one bogey at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.
Schwartzel had a one-stroke lead over India’s Jeev Milkha Singh. South African and Masters runner-up Louis Oosthuizen and American Jason Knutzon were another stroke back.
Schwartzel and Oosthuizen were battling the lingering effects of jet lag after a 30-hour flight to Malaysia early in the week from Augusta, Ga., where they had both competed in the Masters. Oosthuizen lost to Bubba Watson in a playoff at Augusta.
