VILLARREAL, Spain (AP) — Villarreal says forward Giuseppe Rossi has re-injured his right knee and will be sidelined for six more months, ending his hopes of playing for Italy at this year’s European Championship.

Rossi tore his anterior cruciate ligament during a game against Real Madrid on Oct. 26 and had surgery. Villarrreal said Rossi tore the ligament again during a training session Friday and needs another operation. He will miss the start of next season.

The 25-year-old New Jersey native scored 32 goals in all competitions for Villarreal last season. The son of Italian parents, he decided to play for the Azzurri instead of the U.S. national team and has six goals in 27 international appearances.
