Current US captain Love learns from past leaders

ELGIN, S.C. (AP) — Davis Love III says he’s learning what to do and what to avoid from U.S. Ryder Cup leaders of the past as he prepares for this year’s matches as captain of the American team.

Love and 2006 U.S. Ryder Cup captain Tom Lehman held a clinic as part of a tournament honoring the late father of PGA Tour Jonathan Byrd. Lehman says as the selection process drew closer, he regularly heard from player agents or friends putting in a word that might influence his decision on captain’s picks.

Love’s getting that now and knows the lobbying will increase the closer he gets to naming his four captain’s picks in September weeks before the competition against a European team at Medinah, Ill.

The European team won the Ryder Cup in 2010.
