PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) — Gov. John Kitzhaber and U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden have expressed reservations about plans to export coal from the Great Plains to Asia by moving it through Oregon.
The East Oregonian newspaper reports ((http://bit.ly/J63c4E ) that in regional appearances this month, Kitzhaber said plans for massive coal exports raise questions about the economic and environmental impacts, and Wyden called for a time out so the nation can consider its shift to exporting energy.
Half a dozen projects are in various stages of development in the Pacific Northwest.
They include one from a subsidiary of the Australian company Ambre (AM-bur) Energy to ship coal by rail to the Port of Morrow near Boardman. From there, it would be put on barges to be sent downriver to meet ocean liners bound for Asia.
