SEATTLE (AP) — The Department of Defense has announced that a Joint Base Lewis-McChord Stryker brigade will be deployed to Afghanistan in the fall.

The department says the 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division had been previously deployed to Iraq in 2007 and 2009.

The soldiers will undergo summer training in California before being deployed. No exact date was provided.

The 4th Stryker will join the mission to strengthen Afghan national security forces as part of the plan to withdraw American and NATO forces from the country.

Brigade commander Col. Michael A. Getchell says the experience from the two previous deployments and a year and a half of advanced training in Yakima will help his soldiers be “disciplined.”
