MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — A Medford, Ore., man accused of beating his toddler stepson has now been charged with attempted murder.

The Medford Mail Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/JaDhdX) that a grand jury recently added that count to charges facing 27-year-old Matthew Karl Hyrup.

The man pleaded not guilty last month to three charges including first-degree assault and first-degree sodomy.

Prosecutor Terry Smith-Norton says the attempted murder count and a second sodomy charge were added as the case continued to unfold.

Police allege the 19-month-old boy was severely beaten and sexually assaulted by Hyrup on Feb. 23. Officers say the child had been in Hyrup’s care while the child’s mother left for a couple of hours.
