SEATTLE (AP) — The U.S. Department of Labor says it has released a $2.7 million grant to continue employment and job training for workers who were displaced when Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base were merged in 2005.

Thursday’s announcement is part of a $4.8 million grant approved by the department in January of 2011 to retrain about 900 military spouses and civilian defense workers affected by the consolidation. Initially, $2.1 million were released.

The money is being administered by the Washington State Employment Security Department.

In 2005, the two bases became Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
