CHICAGO (AP) — Opening statements will begin in the Chicago trial of a man charged with killing singer Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew in the house where the Hollywood star grew up.
Hudson is expected to attend Monday’s opening statements.
William Balfour’s charged with first-degree murder in the 2008 slayings. He was the estranged husband of Hudson’s sister then, but they’ve since divorced.
The prosecution is expected to tell jurors Balfour flew into a jealous rage after seeing a gift of balloons at the Hudson home he believed came from Julia Hudson’s new boyfriend.
Later, he allegedly shot Hudson’s mother in a living room and her brother as he lay in bed. The body of her 7-year-old nephew was found later in an abandoned SUV.
The defense says any evidence is circumstantial.
