PORTLAND — Portland police want to put up surveillance cameras to help officers watch for illegal drug deals in the Old Town-Chinatown district.

Lt. Robert King says officers would be able to monitor the video from their smartphones while on patrol.

The Oregonian reports Police Chief Mike Reese will make a request to the City Council on Wednesday to allow police to enter into agreements with private property owners to install cameras on their buildings.
