MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Green Bay Packers will release safety Nick Collins amid concerns about his ability to return from a significant neck injury.

Agent Alan Herman confirmed multiple media reports Wednesday that Collins will be released. He sustained the career-threatening injury in the Packers’ Sept. 18 victory at Carolina last season. Herman says Collins has not decided whether he will attempt to continue his career with another team.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy has expressed concern about Collins resuming his career, telling reporters at last month’s NFL meetings that the decision involves “more than football.”

Collins thanked Packers fans on his Twitter account. The Packers have not confirmed the move.

A second-round pick in the 2005 NFL draft, Collins started 95 games in seven NFL seasons.
