NEW YORK (AP) — Iona guard Scott Machado, who led the nation in assists, is the winner of the Haggerty Award, presented to the outstanding college basketball player in the New York area.
The 6-foot-1 senior averaged 13.6 points and 9.9 assists last season and was the first player to have more than 300 assists (327) in a season since 1993. He finished his career with 880 assists, 18th on the career list.
He was to receive the award Thursday night at the 79th annual dinner hosted by the NIT and the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association.
He is fifth Iona player to win the award and first since Steve Burtt in 1984.
Joining Machado on the All-Met first team are Michael Glover of Iona, Moe Harkless of St. John’s, Julian Boyd of LIU-Brooklyn, and Jordan Theodore and Herb Pope of Seton Hall.
