NCAA approves delay on academic components

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The NCAA’s Board of Directors will give low-resource schools more time to comply with the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate requirements.

An NCAA spokesman says the measure was approved Thursday.

Low-resource schools, primarily historically black colleges and universities, are ranked in the bottom 15 percentile based on an average of institutional spending per student, athletic expenses per student-athlete and the average Pell Grant per student. Football Bowl Subdivision schools cannot make the list.

In October, the board approved a proposal requiring schools to have a four-year APR average of 900 or an average of 930 on the two most recent scores to be eligible for postseason play over the next two years. All schools must have a 900 during that span, but some will not have to hit 930 until 2016-17.
