MIAMI (AP) — Miami Marlins president David Samson ran the equivalent of two marathons on Friday in his “Run to Honor the Workers,” raising over $550,000 for 10 different charities.
Samson began the 52.4-mile run in Pompano Beach at 7 a.m. and concluded inside the stadium at 6:40 p.m. prior to the Marlins’ game against the Arizona Diamondbacks to raise funds in honor of the construction workers who built Marlins Park.
Samson, whose previous longest run was 30 miles, ran the first marathon in 5 hours, 20 minutes and the second in 6 hours, 20 minutes with occasional stops. The run consisted of nine five-mile intervals and one 7.4 interval, each dedicated to a different charity. A different runner from a specific charity joined Samson during each interval.
Upon conclusion of his run, the 44-year old Samson met with each charity and posed for photos while clearly laboring. He was then hooked up to four IV bags.
