DENVER (AP) — New York Mets pitcher Mike Pelfrey, already on the 15-day disabled list, was scheduled to see orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews on Monday in Birmingham, Ala., to determine whether he should undergo season-ending reconstructive surgery on his right elbow.

Pelfrey went on the disabled list Tuesday, after reporting tightness and pain in the elbow during his last outing Saturday in which he allowed one run in eight innings against the San Francisco Giants. A subsequent MRI revealed the partial tear in the ulnar collateral ligament of his pitching elbow.

Right-hander Chris Schwinden, recalled from the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in Buffalo, was scheduled to take Pelfrey’s spot in the rotation on Friday against the Rockies.
