NEW YORK (AP) — Joe Tartamella has been hired to be the women’s basketball coach at St. John’s on Friday.

Tartamella spent the past nine seasons at the school and was the associate head coach for the past three years. The Red Storm reached the NCAA tournament regional semifinals for the first time in school history before falling to Duke. The Red Storm have reached the NCAAs the past three years and will host the first two rounds next season.

St. John’s returns four starters, including Shenneika Smith, who hit a game-winning 3-pointer that beat UConn and ended the Huskies’ 99-game home winning streak.

Tartamella succeeds Kim Barnes Arico, who took the head coaching job at Michigan last week. Barnes Arico left St. John’s as the school’s winningest coach.
