PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Police say an hours-long standoff ended when 44-year-old Portland man shot himself inside an apartment.

Officers had responded to a domestic disturbance call around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday. When they arrived, they talked to a woman who said the man had assaulted her and threatened her with a gun. They also learned three children were inside the apartment.

Negotiators talked with the man, who let the children leave the apartment around 9 a.m. From there, contact was lost with him. Police sent a robot inside the apartment and found the man dead in the bathroom from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
