Letter: UK’s universal health care praised

The Columbian

Watching the opening ceremony of the London Olympics, I was pleased to see the celebration of the U.K. National Health Service. They have a right to be proud.

For a cost of less than $3,500 per citizen, everyone has guaranteed health care. Compare that to the U.S. The latest estimates of our health care costs equal more than $8,300 every year for every U.S. citizen, and still we have over 40 million uninsured. The U.S. is the only industrialized nation without universal health care coverage, and we pay three to four times the administrative costs of those other countries. Check out “health care costs around the world” on the Internet, and compare the costs and medical outcomes on the multiple websites that appear.

It’s hard for me to believe that some still claim that we have the best medical system in the world. We need a single-payer health care system and universal health care.
