Putin, a black belt, watches Olympic judo

LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister David Cameron was listening intently, apparently getting instruction on the finer points of Olympic judo from someone who’s written a book on the sport.

That author — none other than Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Staring ahead intently at times, clenching his fists and leaning back in his VIP seat at others, Putin had one of the best views for the Olympic judo matches on Thursday.

He’s honorary president of the International Judo Federation, has competed in the sport since he was a schoolboy and remains active.

Putin came to London for diplomatic talks — though it’s a safe bet that he enjoyed watching judo far more.
