MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Alex Wimmers is the latest Minnesota Twins pitching prospect sent for Tommy John surgery.

The Twins said Wimmers had the ligament replacement operation on his right elbow performed Thursday in Minneapolis by team physician Dr. Dan Buss.

The right-hander was Minnesota’s first-round draft pick in 2010, out of Ohio State, but he has logged only 62 1-3 innings in the minors. He’s been plagued by both control and arm problems. Wimmers made only two starts this season, one for the Gulf Coast League rookie-level team and one for Double-A New Britain.

Right-hander Kyle Gibson, the Twins’ first-round draft pick in 2009, is also recovering from Tommy John surgery. His operation was last summer. Gibson recently began his comeback, with the Gulf Coast League affiliate in Fort Myers, Fla.
