STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Football scholarships will soon be a precious commodity at Penn State.
The recent sanctions handed down by the NCAA included a significant reduction in scholarships. The limits go into the effect for the Class of 2013, though it’s a predicament that coach Bill O’Brien is already tackling since recruiting is well under way.
As if he needed more to worry about with preseason camp starting Monday.
The scholarship limits will likely force Penn State to rely even more on non-scholarship walk-ons, and could put even more pressure on coaches to accurately assess prospects.
One of those prospects is Brennan Franklin, a linebacker from Arizona who 10 days ago became the first recruit to commit to Penn State since the sanctions were announced July 23. He’ll join the team Monday.
