THE DALLES, Ore. (AP) — Searchers are looking for a 19-year-old Eugene man who was swept downstream by the current while swimming in the Columbia River near The Dalles.

Friends told the Wasco County sheriff’s office he swam to a small island near the base of the Highway 197 Dalles Bridge and was trying to swim back Sunday afternoon when the current overpowered him. Boats from the Wasco and Sherman county sheriff’s offices and Oregon State Police searched the river until dark.

The search continues Monday with a dive team from the Skamania County sheriff’s office.
