LONDON (AP) — Ashton Eaton started off the decathlon with an Olympic-best performance in the 100 meters on Wednesday.
The American has the spotlight on him after breaking the world record at the U.S. trials in June when he finished with 9,039 points. His mark eclipsed Roman Sebrle’s 11-year-old record by 13 points.
Eaton, of Eugene, Ore., finished the 100 in 10.35 seconds, beating the time of 10.41 that American Bill Toomey turned in 44 years ago. It was 0.14 seconds slower than Eaton’s time at trials.
After the opening event, Eaton had a 17-point lead over world champion Trey Hardee of Austin, Texas. The long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 meters also will be held on the first day.
Reigning Olympic champion Bryan Clay failed to make the U.S. squad at trials.
