LONDON (AP) — Top-ranked Joel Gonzalez of Spain won the Olympic taekwondo gold medal in the men’s 58-kilogram division Wednesday, beating Lee Dae-hoon of South Korea 17-8.
Although Lee was more often on the attack, Gonzalez managed to block most of his kicks while effectively counter-attacking.
The 22-year-old Gonzalez has twice won the world championship. He fought aggressively in most of his matches, often using his front leg for targeted attacks on his opponents.
The bronze medals were won by Alexey Denisenko of Russia and Oscar Munoz Oviedo of Colombia.
