KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — John Daly’s not done surprising people at the PGA Championship.

The 1991 winner shot a 4-under 68 in Thursday’s opening round, two shots behind early leader Carl Pettersson. It was just the third time Daly’s broken 70 in his past 29 rounds.

Daly was the ninth alternate at Crooked Stick who made it into the PGA 21 years ago, then stunned the field and the gallery with his grip-it-and-rip-it style that captured the Wanamaker Trophy that year. Daly wowed the crowds at The Ocean Course with his long drives and steady touch around the greens.

He held a share of the lead with an eagle on the par-5 11th and a 12-foot putt to save par on No. 18.
