CHICAGO (AP) — The Oakland Athletics have reinstated starter Brandon McCarthy from the 15-day disabled list and placed infielder Eric Sogard on it with a strained back, retroactive to Tuesday.

McCarthy was scheduled to start Friday night’s game against the Chicago White Sox. He has not started since June 19 due to a strained right shoulder. McCarthy is 6-3 with a 2.54 ERA in 12 games this season.

He replaces A.J. Griffin in the rotation. Griffin went on the disabled list on Sunday for a strained right shoulder.

Sogard has been dealing with back problems since Monday, manager Bob Melvin said. Sogard is hitting .167 in 37 games and last played on Monday. Sogard is expected to go to Arizona for treatment.
