Construction workers doused several trees that caught fire near the Ridgefield marina Thursday evening, preventing what could have been a major fire, said Battalion Chief Tim Dawdy of Clark County Fire and Rescue.

Around 5 p.m., Clark County Fire & Rescue responded to what was originally reported as a house fire at North Railroad Avenue and Elm Street.

When firefighters arrived, they found four 30-foot trees that had been on fire. Construction workers working at the Port of Ridgefield pulled up next to the fire with a water truck and sprayed down the trees, putting out the fire before crews arrived, Dawdy said. A power line also fell during the fire.

“They probably stopped it from being a major fire. I think they prevented a lot of damage from happening,” he said.

The cause of the fire is unknown. Dawdy will be investigating the incident.
