ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Lorenzo Alexander has made his name as a self-described “special teams demon” for the Washington Redskins.
This year, though, he’s dropped some of the weight that helped him make those big hits in the kicking game. He’s lost about 30 pounds to focus on his new role as the team’s primary backup at inside linebacker.
Alexander says there’s some trade-off not having the bulk, but he needs the extra speed to chase down receivers and tight ends.
Special teams coach Danny Smith says the real issue isn’t how much Alexander weighs — it’s finding ways to free him up because teams are always double-teaming him.
