Kaiser Permanente Northwest’s Community Benefit Program has awarded the nonprofit Playworks with a $225,000 grant.

Playworks is a national organization the provides safe, healthy play and physical activity to schools at recess and throughout the entire school day.

The nonprofit will use the $225,000 grant to increase the access, opportunities and impact of play for 20,000 school-aged kids in the region.

As part of the one-year grant, the money will be used for training and consultation services at more than 40 schools in Cowlitz, Clark, Washington, Marion and Clackamas counties. The money will also be used to support school-based direct service programming at two east Multnomah County schools and a junior coach program and sports leagues for programs in the Portland-metro area.

The project begins in late August and will continue through the school year, ending in June 2013.
