NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A Tulane spokesman says starting linebacker Trent Mackey has been suspended indefinitely from the team.
While university spokesman Mike Strecker says he cannot say why Mackey was suspended because of privacy policies, the Times-Picayune is reporting that Mackey was arrested Friday along with another suspect in connection with a an armed robbery on July 12.
A police report initially listed Mackey as a victim, but the newspaper says that the other suspect, 19-year-old Robert Murray, has implicated Mackey in the crime.
Mackey, from Port Sulphur, transferred to Tulane from Duke in 2009. He was selected the preseason Conference USA defensive player of the year for the upcoming season.
Last season, Mackey led Tulane with 145 tackles and 14 tackles for losses, including 4 1/2 sacks.
