JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Former Arkansas coach Jack Crowe is revisiting the site of his biggest career loss.

Crowe is leading his Jacksonville State Gamecocks into Razorback Stadium for the season opener on Sept. 1 against No. 10 Arkansas.

Then-athletic director Frank Broyles fired him after losing the 1992 season opener 10-3 to The Citadel. Their clash in Broyles’ office a day later ended with Crowe telling his boss to call him “if you want me to be your football coach.”

That call never came.

Sixty-five-year-old Crowe still speaks well of the 87-year-old Broyles and has a signed photograph of the Hall of Famer hanging in his office.

The game’s only touchdown came on a fumble recovery in the first season the NCAA allowed fumbles to be advanced.
