Ex-PSU president’s lawyers dispute Freeh report

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Ousted Penn State President Graham Spanier is fighting back against criticism of how he handled the Jerry Sandusky sex-abuse scandal, as he waits to learn if he’ll be charged in the alleged cover-up.

Spanier tells The New Yorker magazine that he’s stunned by the university-backed report prepared by ex-FBI director Louis Freeh.

Spanier says it’s ridiculous to say he’d cover up for a child predator for the sake of avoiding bad publicity. He says he made decisions that took heat every day of his 16-year tenure.

Spanier’s lawyers, meanwhile, are also attacking Freeh’s report, calling it “blundering” and “biased.”

Freeh’s group says it stands by its work.

Sandusk, the former assistant football coach, awaits sentencing after being convicted of molesting 10 boys, some on Penn State’s campus.
