AMHERST, Mass. (AP) — Whitney Mollica Goldstein, the granddaughter of Tampa Bay Rays senior adviser and coach Don Zimmer, has been promoted to interim head softball coach at Amherst.

Mollica Goldstein, the team’s top assistant coach the past two seasons, succeeds Sue Everden, who is stepping down after 14 seasons to concentrate on her position as head volleyball coach. The softball team won 235 games in that span and was 36-6 this year after going 14-16 in 2011.

Zimmer, 81, played 12 seasons in the majors. He coached eight teams and served as manager of the San Diego Padres, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs.

Mollica Goldstein, a Windham, N.H., native, played third base for Massachusetts where she was player and rookie of the year in the Atlantic 10 in 2006.
