MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) — Ball State linebacker Jonathan Newsome has been suspended for the first two games of the season for violating team rules.

Coach Pete Lembo announced the suspension Thursday. The Muncie Star Press reported that Newsome was arrested Monday after a bag containing marijuana was allegedly found in his wallet. The newspaper says he is facing a preliminary charge of possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor.

Newsome sat out last season after transferring from Ohio State, where he spent the previous two seasons.

Lembo says the school is fully aware of the allegations and made the decision based on the information the school had.

The redshirt junior will miss games against Eastern Michigan and Clemson. He would be eligible to play on Sept. 15 against Indiana.
