Ruud surprised, but pleased to wind up with Saints

METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Barrett Ruud says he was caught off guard by the Seahawks’ decision to trade him only months after bringing him to Seattle as a free agent.

He isn’t complaining about where he ended up, though.

Ruud figures the New Orleans Saints (No. 9 in AP Pro 32) must have wanted him if they traded for him shortly before the regular season. He says he’s also pleased to be with a club that has a chance to contend for the playoffs.

New Orleans traded an undisclosed future draft choice to Seattle on Monday night to acquire Ruud, a couple days after three Saints linebackers were hurt in a preseason game against Jacksonville.

It’s not yet clear whether Ruud, who went through his first Saints practice Wednesday, will play against Houston in Saturday night’s preseason game.
