LOS ANGELES (AP) — A bail motion filed for tennis referee Lois Ann Goodman says she had two knee replacements, a shoulder replacement and was awaiting another when she was arrested and charged with beating her husband to death with a coffee mug.
Her lawyer says in the motion filed late Monday that the 70-year-old woman also suffers from rheumatoid arthritis hearing loss and constant spinal pain.
Attorney Alison Triessl (TRY-zel) suggested that Goodman was incapable of committing the crime with which she is charged.
She gave the court 40 testimonial letters from other tennis umpires, neighbors, family and friends, hailing Goodman as a beloved friend, colleague, mother and grandmother who treated her husband like a king.
Triessl asked that Goodman’s $1 million bail be reduced to $100,000, or that she be released on electronic monitoring.
