Houston defeats Texas Southern 78-75 in overtime

HOUSTON (AP) — TaShawn Thomas had 23 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, and Joseph Young scored seven of his 21 points in overtime as Houston held off Texas Southern 78-75 on Saturday night.

The Cougars (7-2) quickly opened a six-point lead in overtime on back-to-back three-point plays by Young and Thomas. A young jumper made the score 74-69 with 1:23 remaining, and Houston protected the lead at the free-throw line.

Omar Strong had 29 points and made eight 3-pointers for the Tigers (1-8).

J.J. Thompson had 10 points and six assists for Houston, which overcome a nine-point deficit in the final 3:49 of regulation to force overtime. Danuel House’s 3-pointer with nine seconds to play tied the score at 66-all.
