FARMVILLE, Va. (AP) — Tristan Carey scored 17 of his 25 points in the first half and freshman Michael Kessens posted his sixth double-double of the season in Longwood’s 86-74 win over Division III foe Southern Virginia.

Kessens had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Nik Brown added 12.

Longwood (3-7) led 44-28 at halftime after shooting 47 percent (17 of 36) and pulling down 26 rebounds in the frame.

Longwood pushed its lead to 58-37 behind a Kessens layup 5 minutes into the second half but Southern Virginia (6-3) outscored the Lancers 35-18 over the next 11 minutes to cut the deficit to 76-72 with 3:13 left to play.

Brown, however, then scored five straight points to put Longwood back up by nine, 81-72, and the Lancers held Southern Virginia to just one field goal over the final 3 minutes to pull away.

Anders Jacobson led Southern Virginia with 14 points.
