SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Terrell Vinson scored a career-high 22 points and Chaz Williams added 20 with nine assists as Massachusetts pulled away in the final 1:39 of overtime to defeat Elon 78-73 Saturday.
Jesse Morgan’s layup — his first points of the game after he’d missed his first eight shots — broke a 70-70 tie and started an 8-1 run for the Minutemen (5-3).
Massachusetts led 62-55 with 3:07 remaining in the second half after a 3-pointer by Vinson, but the Phoenix (6-4) closed the gap and produced the game’s 10th tie on Tanner Samson’s 3-pointer with 8 seconds left, which sent it to overtime tied 66-66.
Sampson Carter had 13 points and 11 rebounds for Massachusetts, and Vinson made 13 consecutive free throws before missing his final try with 5 seconds left in overtime.
