UNC Asheville holds off Northeastern 79-73

BOSTON (AP) — Jeremy Atkinson scored 21 points, Jon Nwannunu had 16 points and UNC Asheville held off a late rally by Northeastern in a 79-73 win on Tuesday.

Keith Hornsby finished with 15 points and Will Weeks added 14 for the Bulldogs (4-7), who have won three of their last four games. Atkinson also had a game-high nine rebounds.

UNC Asheville took a 71-57 lead with 3:52 left in the game on Hornsby’s free throw. But the Huskies went on a 9-0 run, capped by Joel Smith’s 3-pointer with 1:16 remaining, to trim the deficit to five points.

But Northeastern got no closer than four points the rest of the way, and the Bulldogs hit eight free throws down the stretch to help seal the victory.

Smith scored 22 points and Jonathan Lee had 19 for Northeastern (4-6), which has lost five straight games. Quincy Ford added 11 points and eight rebounds.
