Swiss duo Smith, Niederer win ski cross races

VAL THORENS, France (AP) — Fanny Smith of Switzerland extended her perfect start to the season with a third straight win in World Cup ski cross, and countryman Armin Niederer won the men’s event.

After winning at Nakiska and Telluride, the 20-year-old Smith beat Marte Hoeie Gjefsen of Norway and Austria’s Andrea Limbacher. Frenchwoman Ophelie David, who was second to Smith in races at Nakiska and Telluride, was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Smith leads the overall standings with 60 points, ahead of David’s 36.

Niederer beat Brady Leman of Canada and Joe Swensson of the United States to stay atop the men’s standings.

The 25-year-old Niederer, who won in Nakiska, leads the overall standings with 52 points, while Leman has 40.
