Western Michigan rolls past Mount St. Mary’s 87-66

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Shayne Whittington scored 24 points on 10-of-11 shooting Saturday, leading Western Michigan to an 87-66 victory over Mount St. Mary’s in the first-ever meeting between the schools.

Whittington led a 60 percent overall shooting effort for the Broncos (8-4), including 67 percent in the first half. Darius Paul, who came in leading Mid-American Conference freshmen in scoring and rebounding, added 19 points, and Brandon Pokley scored 15, including three 3-pointers.

Rashad Whack led the Mountaineers (4-6) with 16 points, and Julian Norfleet and Sam Prescott scored 14 apiece. Mount St. Mary’s shot just 40 percent from the field.

Western Michigan never trailed, leading 44-28 at halftime and by as many as 29 in the second half. The Broncos dominated inside, outrebounding the Mountaineers 40-21 and outscoring them 46-22 in the paint.
