Lindsey promoted to head coach at USD

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Former NFL defensive coordinator Dale Lindsey has been promoted to head coach at the University of San Diego.

He replaces Ron Caragher who recently was hired as coach at San Jose State.

Lindsey was USD’s defensive coordinator this season, when the Toreros were 8-3 and earned a share of the Pioneer Football League title. He was the Toreros’ linebackers coach in 2008 before working as New Mexico State’s assistant head coach and linebackers coach from 2009-2011.

He was the Chargers’ linebackers coach from 1992-96 and defensive coordinator from 2002-03. Lindsey also spent time with the Chicago Bears, New England Patriots, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers.

Lindsey played linebacker and fullback for two years at Western Kentucky. He was a linebacker for the Cleveland Browns from 1965-73.
