JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars have placed running back Maurice Jones-Drew on injured reserve because of a foot injury.

The Jaguars (2-13) waited nearly two months before ending Jones-Drew’s season, holding out hope that the league’s leading rusher in 2011 would get healthy.

He injured his left foot Oct. 21 at Oakland when he was tackled on the opening play. He started running full speed last week, but his foot didn’t respond as well as team trainers had hoped, so risking him in the season finale at Tennessee made no sense.

Jones-Drew, who has one year remaining on a five-year, $31.5 million contract, doesn’t anticipate missing anything mandatory in the offseason.

The Jaguars signed rookie defensive tackle Jerome Long off Kansas City’s practice squad to take Jones-Drew’s roster spot.
