PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A young man who has been held in Oregon State Hospital since he shot a Clackamas County sheriff’s deputy in 2003 may be moved to a residential treatment facility in Pendleton.

The state Psychiatric Security Review Board held a three-hour meeting Wednesday in Salem and decided 24-year-old Nick Teixeira could be released from the mental hospital if he passes psychiatric evaluations.

The Oregonian reports (http://is.gd/ricqpG ) he was sentenced to 20 years of secure mental health supervision after the shooting that forced Sgt. Damon Coates to retire with permanent disabilities.

Teixeira’s lawyer says he no longer suffers from psychosis, has been off medication for years and is safe for transfer.
