SEATTLE (AP) — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement say they are deporting a 27-year-old Mexican national who was involved in drug-fueled orgy that ended with the strangling death of a teenager in Oregon City five years ago.
ICE spokesman Andrew Munoz says Gilberto Javier Arellano-Gamboa has been handed over to the federal agency in Tacoma after serving a state prison sentence of more than four years for attempted first-degree sexual abuse.
Arellano-Gamboa and his cousin Alejandro Emeterio Rivera-Gamboa were arrested for the death of 15-year-old Dani Countryman of Texas in an Oregon City apartment in 2007.
Rivera-Gamboa eventually pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life in prison. Four others were also convicted of lesser crimes.
Countryman’s death was a flash point in the debate over illegal immigration, leading Clackamas County to adopt new rules around reporting illegal immigrants with criminal records to federal authorities.
