BIELLA, Italy (AP) — Former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone rallied to beat 89th-ranked Kateryna Bondarenko 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-4 Sunday, but Sara Errani retired midway through her match with Lesia Tsurenko to leave Italy tied at 2 with Ukraine in the first round of the Fed Cup.

Errani retired with a right knee problem while trailing 6-1, 3-0 against the 121st-ranked Tsurenko.

The tie was to be decided by a doubles match featuring Flavia Pennetta and Roberta Vinci against Tsurenko and Olga Savchuk.

The winner will face the Czech Republic in the semifinals on April 21-22.
