Letter: Accountability trailing behind

The Columbian
Published: February 5, 2012, 4:00pm

Regarding the Jan. 31 editorial, “A trail meant for royalty,” the real question underlying this episode of government fraud, waste and abuse is, “So who’s responsible?” If you or I blundered through something like that in our profession, you can almost guarantee the concept of accountability would kick into high gear with a proverbial kick to our backsides.

Where is the accountability on this project, which is only a portion of the Chelatchie Prairie Railroad Trail? Shouldn’t the project have been halted back in the planning stage well before this story went to print? It’s either pathetic planning, or someone is guilty of bushwhacking the taxpayers. We, the public, deserve an answer on who dropped the ball.

So how are we supposed to “trust” the planners with the much larger task of building a replacement Interstate 5 bridge when we can’t get a little trail done right? Gosh, we can only begin to guess what the final cost to that debacle will be.
