Appeals court strikes down Calif. ban on gay marriage

Issue likely headed to the U.S. Supreme Court

SAN FRANCISCO — Same-sex marriage moved one step closer to the Supreme Court on Tuesday when a federal appeals court ruled California’s ban unconstitutional, saying it serves no purpose other than to “lessen the status and human dignity” of gays.

The bill to make Washington the seventh state to legally recognize same-sex marriages goes to a vote in the state House of Representatives starting at 1 p.m.
