Freshmen applications break record at Western

SEATTLE (AP) — Western Washington University says it has received a record number of freshmen applications this year.

That lines up with trends at the University of Washington and Washington State University.

Western has received 9,631 freshmen applications for about 2,800 freshmen slots for fall 2012. That’s about 500 more applications than last year, despite the fact that the university set an earlier application deadline.

Although in-state applications for the UW freshmen class are down this year, overall applications are nearing record levels.

WSU has not cut off its applications for next fall, but university officials say they are also heading toward a record.
